For those who are fascinated with Asian culture and Asian art, San Francisco has prepared more than 15,000 works of art that represent 6,000 years of Asian history, all at the Asian Art Museum. Avery Brundage donated a part of his Asian art collection to the city of San Francisco in 1959. His only condition was that the city built a museum to house this collection. And so, a new wing of the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum was opened on June 10, 1966.
But 37 years later, in the former Beaux Arts-style Main Library, the Asian Art Museum was opened on March 20. Nowadays, the Asian Art Museum wishes to help people all over the world discover the historical, aesthetic and intellectual values of Asian art and culture. Several exhibitions are meant to serve this purpose. We invite you to admire unique works of art at Traditions Unbound: Groundbreaking Painters of 18th-Century Kyoto, In a New Light: The Asian Art Museum Collection, From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics, The Elegant Gathering: The Yeh Family Collection, Pioneers of Philippine Art: Luna, Amorsolo, Zóbel and many other exhibits we’re convinced you’ll love.
You may visit the museum from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday, and from 10 am to 9 pm on Thursday.
