1201 Mason Street. That’s where children aged 3 and up and adults of all ages will find the amazing Cable Car Barn and the Cable Car Museum. The best way to get here is by cable car. If you wish to know exactly how a cable car works, that’s definitely the place to come. Various devices such as trucks, cables, brake mechanisms, and grips shall be explained to you.
The first cable car was tested on August 2nd, 1873 by Andrew Smith Hallidie. The Cable Car Museum was created 101 years after. Nowadays, the museum is a nonprofit facility operated by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum.
The Cable Car Museum houses three cable cars built in the 1870s: the Clay Street Hill Railroad No. 8 grip car, the Sutter Street Railway No. 46 grip car and the No. 54 trailer. At the museum you will also find a large number of photos representing the history of the cable cars.
The Cable Car Museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm April through September 30 and from 10 am to 5 pm October through March 31. Admission is free.
