The museum was opened in 1935 and, at that time, it was the first museum dedicated especially to 20th century art on the West Coast.The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art invites you to admire great works of art at special exhibits such as Chuck Close: Self-Portraits 1967-2005, 1906 Earthquake: A Disaster in Pictures, Richard Long: The Path Is the Place Is the Line, New Work: Wangechi Mutu, The Art of Design: The Architecture and Design Collection and Todd Eberle: Architectural Abstractions.
During summer hours, the museum is open on Monday and Tuesday from 11 am to 5:45 pm, on Thursday from 11 am to 8:45 pm and Friday through Sunday from 11 am to 5:45 pm.
During winter hours, the museum is open on Monday and Tuesday from 10 am to 5:45 pm, on Thursday from 10 am to 8:45 pm and Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 5:45 pm. Children aged 12 and under are admitted for free.
